Construction of Boulder City bypass should go unnoticed

The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada met today to hear an update on the Boulder City bypass project.

The issue: A freeway bypass is under construction to connect U.S. 95 and the Hoover Dam bypass bridge around Boulder City.

The vote: No vote was taken.

What's happening: Motorists won’t see any major changes in the first phase of reconstruction of U.S. 95 near the Railroad Pass casino until early 2015. That section is budgeted to cost $45 million to $52 million.

The Nevada Department of Transportation bought about 75 percent of the right-of-way near the casino for $20 million to $30 million, and $1.4 million in environmental protections for plants and desert tortoises already have been completed. NDOT will award contracts to relocate utility lines in fall.

A traffic signal on northbound U.S. 95 at the casino will be removed, and NDOT plans to build a 30-foot retaining wall that will be landscaped with scenes of the construction of Hoover Dam.

The project, part of the Interstate 11 corridor, is expected to take 18 to 24 months to complete.
