El Cortez says hotel guests, patrons will have to be at least 21

El Cortez, 2015

The El Cortez in downtown Las Vegas has started a transition to eventually become a 21-and-up resort, according to a news release.

Beginning April 1, those who wish to book a room at one of the El Cortez’s hotel rooms will need to be at least 21.

Eventually, El Cortez officials say, there will be identification checks at all entrances to the casino and its adjoining hotel facilities and all amenities will be 21-and-over.

“This transition comes after careful consideration and decades of trying to accommodate minors in a property that is focused primarily on gaming and popular casino bars,” said Adam Wiesberg, general manager of the property, in the release.

Built in 1941, the El Cortez has about 700 slot machines on its casino floor, along with 25 table games.

The vintage property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

“While Las Vegas has grown and adapted to cater to all demographics, El Cortez remains a traditional gambling house with an indescribable feeling of stepping back in time,” Wiesberg said. “El Cortez is the spot where adults have gathered to enjoy a cocktail or two and try their luck in the casino for over 80 years.”
