Outdoor enthusiasts, exercise junkies and families looking for free entertainment have reason to be excited thanks to the arrival of an expansive fitness area in the southwest Las Vegas Valley.
Clark County commissioners recently celebrated the grand opening of the Mighty Mountain Fitness Area at Mountain’s Edge Regional Park. The fitness area was paid for with $8.5 million from the Bureau of Land Management through the sale of public lands authorized by the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act, according to a news release.
Also, retail openings spread across Downtown Summerlin, Tivoli Village and Town Square; a philanthropy-driven library for children is set to open; and downtown is hit with notable closures.

Mighty Mountain Fitness Area
Clark County commissioners celebrated the grand opening of the Mighty Mountain Fitness Area at Mountain’s Edge Regional Park on Oct. 24.
The 18-acre fitness area has a series of rings built for climbing, billed as a first for the valley parks system. The area also boasts a wall for racquet sports and other games; a bicycle-riding area; exercise stations; multi-use turf fields; a meditation garden; a 1.5-mile walking trail; picnic facilities; shade shelters and restrooms.
The park is the first phase of Mountain’s Edge Regional Park, which consists of about 220 acres.
The fitness area was named by 10-year-old Mia Ramirez, a fifth-grader at Diskin Elementary School, who suggested Mighty Mountain in a contest for students, according to a news release.
The park is located at 8101 Mountain’s Edge Parkway in Las Vegas.

The Toy Box
The Toy Box, a store featuring eclectic toys, board games, action figures, pop-culture collectibles and more plans to open in Downtown Summerlin early this week.
The Toy Box is expanding from Edmonton, Alberta, where it will continue to operate its original store, according to a news release.
The store will be at 1980 Festival Plaza Drive, Suite 175. Its hours will be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Tivoli Village stores
Several retailers have joined Tivoli Village.
Lorna Jane opened its first Nevada location Oct. 24. The fitness and fashion store is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
Corsa Collections is set to open Nov. 7. The store’s signature products will be high-end jewelry and handbags.
Also, Market LV at Tivoli Village recently added Sassy the Boutique and Good Luck Accessories, and the Lash Bar is expected to open this month.
Tivoli Village is at 440 S. Rampart Blvd. in Las Vegas.

Town Square stores
More retailers have set up shop at Town Square.
Silver Post, which offers a range of Native American jewelry and gemstones, clothing, handcrafted pottery and artifacts, opened Oct. 24.
Apricot Lane, a boutique offering celebrity-inspired apparel, jewelry, shoes, handbags and accessories, opened in August, as did Angl, a women’s-fashion hotspot.
Town Square, located at 6605 Las Vegas Blvd. South, is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Books for Kids library
The Mario Batali Foundation announced the opening of its Books for Kids library and will hold an opening and dedication ceremony at 11 a.m. Nov. 7 at the Acelero Learning Reach Out Center at 1522 Pinto Lane in Las Vegas.
Books for Kids is designed to promote literacy among children, with an emphasis on low-income and at-risk children, according to a news release. Acelero serves more than 80 children ages 3 to 5.
The Mario Batali Foundation launched in 2008, and it has sponsored similar libraries throughout New York.

Downtown closures
The Lady Silvia, a popular downtown Arts District bar and speakeasy notable for its library-inspired surroundings, quietly closed in late October.
The Lady Silvia, which was on the Soho Lofts ground floor, opened in summer 2011.
Also, Dana Satterwhite’s TastySpace Gallery inside Emergency Arts is slated to close Dec. 1, ending a run of more than two years.

Decatur Tavern
Decatur Tavern, which opened in 1963, closed Oct. 28.
The 24-hour bar, located at 546 S. Decatur Blvd., had been a neighborhood fixture at Decatur Boulevard and Alta Drive.
