Las Vegas’ McCarran makes list of most social airports

Travelers pass by slot machines in the baggage claim area in February 2008 at McCarran International Airport.

McCarran International Airport has made the top 10 on a list compiled by Facebook of the world’s most social airports.

Las Vegas’ airport, the seventh busiest in the country, is No. 9 on the list based on Facebook check-ins and third-party location services that have integrated with the Facebook Places API between August 2010 and November 2011.

Los Angeles International Airport has the top spot on the list, followed by the nation’s busiest airport, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International.

O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, San Francisco International, Dallas-Fort Worth and Denver are next, followed by the top foreign airport, Sydney, Australia’s Kingsford Smith Airport.

Phoenix’s Sky Harbor International is No. 8, and the top 10 is rounded out with Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok, Thailand.

Only five of the top 25 airports were outside the United States.

Facebook says airport check-ins routinely spike during the Christmas and New Year’s holiday travel rush.

Last December, the company reported check-ins were 20 times the normal average on Dec. 18, with big jumps on Dec. 23 and 24.

After a lull on Christmas Day, airport check-ins jumped again Dec. 29-31 as people traveled to their New Year’s Eve destinations.
