Southwest Airlines to be featured in new reality TV series

A Southwest Airlines jet takes off from McCarran International Airport on Friday, Aug. 26, 2011.

Southwest Airlines will be the subject of a new reality television series giving a behind-the-scenes look at the discount air carrier’s employees and customers.

TLC will air the new series, and the network has ordered 13 half-hour shows from ITV Studios America, a U.S.-based subsidiary of a British production company. A title, premiere date and time of broadcast have not been set.

Southwest is McCarran International Airport’s busiest air carrier.

“We are excited to open our doors to TLC viewers, because our employees will be wonderful ambassadors to reveal the behind-the-scenes happenings of working for an airline,” Linda Rutherford, Southwest’s vice president of communication and strategic outreach, said in a release announcing the show.

The show will be filmed at Baltimore-Washington International Airport and Denver International Airport.

The show is Southwest’s second foray into reality TV.

In 2004, the company participated in the production of “Airline,” which had 70 episodes over three seasons and showed Southwest employees’ interaction with customers at Baltimore-Washington International, Los Angeles International, Chicago Midway Airport and Houston Hobby International Airport.

ITV Studios America has several shows in production with major networks and syndicators, including “Prime Suspect,” “Hell’s Kitchen” and “Kitchen Nightmares.”
