Convention Center to offer free wireless Internet access

Free wireless Internet access will be available in public areas of the Las Vegas Convention Center beginning next year, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and its telecommunications contractor said today.

Smart City Networks, the LVCVA’s wireless Internet access provider at the Convention Center, will offer a tiered service that will include free WiFi in public areas and premium services with greater bandwidth for people who want to upgrade their service.

Smart City will offer more bandwidth to customers for $12.95 a day or $99.95 a day for what is described as “exhibitor grade WiFi access” at trade show booths.

An LVCVA spokesman said Smart City offered to provide the free service at no cost to the LVCVA, which agreed that it would be a beneficial service to convention customers.

“In today’s always-connected world, Wi-Fi is another vital tool that is essential to conducting business, and we pride ourselves in providing the best possible business environment for our visitors,” said Terry Jicinsky, senior vice president of operations for the LVCVA, which owns the Convention Center.

“The Las Vegas Convention Center welcomes thousands of visitors and exhibitors daily all of whom have differing needs and expectations — keeping them connected is our top priority,” said Mark Haley, president of Smart City in a release announcing the service. “We are pleased to provide this new Wi-Fi service at the Convention Center enabling people to use Wi-Fi for their basic daily tasks, like checking email or surfing the web, for free.”

The Convention Center free WiFi is the second major tourist-centered location to offer free wireless Internet access. Free WiFi also is offered at McCarran International Airport.
