Allegiant Air to end service at Long Beach Airport

Las Vegas-based discount air carrier Allegiant Air announced Friday that it would end its service at Long Beach Airport on Nov. 28.

Customers with reservations beyond that date will be contacted by the airline for refunds.

Company officials said the decision to retreat from Long Beach was economical and that the airport was a good partner since operations began there in July 2010.

Allegiant flies nonstop routes between Long Beach and Las Vegas; Bellingham, Wash.; Idaho Falls, Idaho; and Colorado Springs, Colo.

Allegiant’s leisure travel model of operating one or two flights a day, six days a week, was always a competitive struggle against established Long Beach carrier JetBlue, which has offered five flights a day to and from McCarran International Airport.

Allegiant made a splash in Long Beach last December when it rolled out $19 air fares between Las Vegas and Long Beach. JetBlue matched the price and Southwest Airlines, which serves nearby Los Angeles International Airport, also cut fares.

The fare war inspired JetBlue to add two daily flights to offer five between Las Vegas and Long Beach.

Allegiant hasn’t announced plans for aircraft committed to its Long Beach routes.
