Polulu Corp., a Las Vegas electronics company, approved for almost $200,000 in tax abatements

The Governor’s Office of Economic Development considered several tax abatement and deferrals today for companies that want to relocate to or expand in Nevada. One of the requests was from a Clark County business.

The issue: Polulu Corp., a Las Vegas company that produces robot kits, parts and electronics and offers custom laser cutting services, sought tax abatements that required approval from the board.

The vote: Approved 6-2

What it means: The company will get its sales tax reduced to 2 percent, its modified business tax lowered to 50 percent for four years and its personal property tax cut to 50 percent for 10 years, saving the company a total of $168,338. Polulu says that will enable it to add 11 jobs with average wages of $23.16 an hour and make a capital investment of $1.2 million.

The company has grown from two to 41 employees and has expanded six times, owners said. It has hired engineering graduates from UNLV and UNR and intends to add part-time summer positions for local students.

About 97 percent of Polulu's customers come from outside Nevada.
