The Container Store to enter Las Vegas market at Town Square

A unique and fast-growing national retailer, The Container Store, says it plans to enter the Nevada market with a store at Town Square in Las Vegas.

The Dallas-based company said Monday that its Las Vegas store would open May 12.

The Container Store says it's on track to have 59 stores around the country by year’s end and that its annual sales run about $650 million.

The company’s stores offer some 10,000 products in the storage, organization and recycling fields. Store outlets have "16 signature lifestyle departments such as closet, kitchen, office, travel, gift packaging and laundry to organize its time- and space-starved customers," the firm said in announcing its growth plans.

The 22,000-square-foot Las Vegas store will occupy the Town Square space vacated by the Borders book store chain, which filed for bankruptcy last year and halted operations nationwide.

The Container Store didn’t immediately say how many people would be hired in Las Vegas. On Monday, it announced plans to open six stores around the country this year, generating more than 400 jobs.

The company, which ranks No. 22 on Fortune’s list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For, says it invests in its workforce by offering pay that is 50 to 100 percent higher than the retail industry average.

The company didn’t immediately say how much it would pay its Las Vegas employees or what benefits would be offered.

The Container Store also says that each full-time salesperson receives more than 263 hours of training in the first year, compared with the retail industry average of seven to 10 hours.

The privately-held firm is also unique in that it promotes “Conscious Capitalism’’ and has a blog promoting its principled way of doing business at standfor.containerstore.com.

One of the company’s policies is to be committed to the community, so it said it would donate 10 percent of grand opening weekend sales to the Junior League of Las Vegas.
