The Nevada Minority Supplier Development Council will host a seminar on intellectual property from 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 27. Topics will include copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets and patents, and participants will have a chance for a brief one-on-one with an attorney after the seminar. There is no charge to attend. The Public Education Foundation is offering scholarships to high school seniors planning to continue their education at an accredited college, university or other post-secondary institution. This year, the foundation expects to award more than 440 scholarships totaling more than $600,000. Applications are available online at www.thepef.org. Applications must be postmarked by Feb. 29 to be eligible for consideration.

Dale Eeles is vice president of event development, Bo Gardner is vice president of corporate marketing and Chase Boberg is event development coordinator for Las Vegas Events, the special events agency for the city. Eeles has been with the agency since 2005, and was vice president of corporate marketing prior to the new position. Gardner is a veteran sales executive who was previously with Nevada Beverage Company. He will be responsible for sales and management of event sponsorships, communication and for consultation on sponsorships for Laughlin, Mesquite and Las Vegas hotel properties. Boberg will assist in these efforts.

Dossia, a nonprofit health management system provider based in Cambridge, Mass., has announced a strategic alliance with Las Vegas-based patient advocacy service provider PatientPAL. The goal of the partnership is to assist consumers in navigating the health care system and to help individuals make good decisions, with a heavy emphasis on service and support. The Dossia Health Management System was launched in 2011 and includes several large U.S. employers with a common goal of helping employees make better-informed health care decisions. United Way of Southern Nevada is offering an “Earn It, Keep It, Save It” complimentary tax preparation service. Individuals whose household income was less than $50,000 in 2011 are eligible to have tax returns filed at no charge by IRS-certified volunteers. The service is available through April 17. Nathan Adelson Hospice, Nevada’s largest non-profit hospice, has launched the Learning Institute to offer continuing education courses related to palliative and hospice care. The Learning Institute provides quality educational programs, many approved for continuing education for nurses and social workers. Program content is developed to be of value to clinical professionals, hospice management, home health, long-term facilities and hospitals. The Learning Institute website also provides a Free Caregiver Education category.
The Learning Institute at Nathan Adelson Hospice is hosting its first continuing education all-day seminar, ‘Living with Grief,’ from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 14 at United Healthcare, 2716 N. Tenaya Way in Las Vegas. The program will feature select panelists, national keynote speakers and Hospice Foundation of America’s DVD professional series.

The annual Desert Research Institute Nevada Medal dinner is scheduled for April 26 at Aria. Steven Squyres, who was the principal investigator for the Mars Explorations Rover project, will receive the DRI Nevada Medal. Squyres is currently the Goldwin Smith Professor of Astronomy at Cornell University, and has won numerous awards for his work. More information is available at www.dri.edu/25.

The NV Energy Foundation contributed more than $342,000 to 61 organizations statewide, including multiyear commitments, during the fourth quarter of 2011. Grants went to 29 Southern Nevada organizations, including the American Cancer Society, Down Syndrome Organization of Southern Nevada, the City Impact Foundation and the I Have A Dream Foundation. Each quarter, the foundation contributes to local nonprofit organizations. Grants are focused on five philanthropic areas: education, the environment, youth development, arts and multi-cultural outreach and health and human services.
