Nordstrom Rack coming to Shops at Summerlin

The Shops at Summerlin, a formerly stalled real estate project now slated for completion, has landed another large retailer.

Nordstrom executives said today they plan to open a 36,000-square-foot Nordstrom Rack at the 1.6 million-square-foot Las Vegas complex in fall 2014.

Nordstrom Rack, a discount retailer, has one other location in the valley, on Stephanie Street at Sunset Road, near the Galleria at Sunset mall. Its owners also have a regular Nordstrom department store at Fashion Show mall on the Strip.

“We’ve known for a long time that we wanted to be in Summerlin,” Nordstrom Rack President Geevy Thomas said in a news release.

The Shops at Summerlin was mothballed by then-owner General Growth Properties in October 2008 amid the national economic meltdown, leaving a steel skeleton off the 215 Beltway near Red Rock Resort.

Current owner Howard Hughes Corp., a spin-off from General Growth, announced last September that the project was back on track with Macy’s as an anchor store. A few months later, it said Dillard’s also would locate there.

Macy’s, Dillard’s and Nordstrom all were supposed to have stores there before the project, then called the Shops at Summerlin Centre, was tabled.

Hughes started construction in May on the retail and office hub and had spent about $17 million in development costs through June 30, the company said last month.

The Dallas-based developer said it expects to spend $390 million and to arrange project financing by year’s end.
