SLS debuts amid high expectations; skateboarding shop to ride park’s success

A new addition to the north end of the Strip is promising a locals-friendly atmosphere.

SLS Las Vegas officially debuted Saturday.

The hotel is making news for its modern design, its location and its promise to welcome locals. Meanwhile, a skateboarding store sets up shop, and a new gallery offers Henderson a taste of the arts.

      The newest addition to the north end of the Strip, SLS opened Saturday.

      The hotel, formerly the Sahara, is part of a group of SLS Hotels, the work of Sam Nazarian.

      Offering more than 1,600 guest rooms and suites, the much publicized hotel features a small casino floor as well as restaurants, 30,000 square feet of flexible meeting space, a spa, shops and more.

      Pharmacy Boardshop opened its doors to the public Wednesday.

      The 1,600-square-foot store carries skateboards and skateboard parts as well as shoes and clothing.

      Located at 725 W. Craig Road, North Las Vegas, the business is directly across from the Craig Ranch Regional Park and its skate park. Pharmacy Boardshop is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.

    • America First Credit Union at 6090 S. Durango Drive, Las Vegas.

      America First Credit Union

      Member-owned, not-for-profit cooperative America First Credit Union officially opened a new location Aug. 4.

      The 3,962-square-foot branch at 6090 S. Durango Drive was the fifth new location of 2014.

      It is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

      Pinot’s Palette

      Paint-and-sip franchise Pinot’s Palette debuted its first Nevada location last week.

      The business held a grand-opening celebration Thursday and Friday to welcome guests to the 3,480-square-foot Henderson studio in the District at Green Valley Ranch.

      Guests can paint during public classes, open studio hours and family days with a selection of 18 wines, 16 beer flavors, specialty drinks and nonalcoholic beverages available.

      Long John Silver's closed one of its Las Vegas locations last month.

      Without the restaurant at 1229 E. Flamingo Road, Las Vegas, near UNLV, the chain now has eight locations in the valley.
