Describe your business.
We’re basically a full pro archery shop — from lessons to equipment rental and range, service, parts. We do birthday parties, team-building events and everything from leagues and the whole nine yards — strictly archery.
Who are your customers?
From 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds to the elderly and any kind of demographic and handicap in between. One of the nice things about archery is that, really, archery can be done by pretty much everybody.
How do you talk a nervous beginner through the shooting process?
Depending on the individual, you kind of size them up on their perception of what’s going on. I’m kind of a jokester, so to break the ice I’ll do something funny. I’ll purposely miss a shot and send it down the range and say “Hey, it happens to everybody.” Then you’re just calm with them, nice and patient, and walk them through it nice and slow. Once they get the concept and understand, their nervousness just disappears.
What is the hardest part of your job?
Paperwork — just the payroll, taxes, the filing of invoices, paying vendors, etc. It’s why I still have (my dad) around. I let him take care of that. That’s his forte, and he loves to do that anyway.
What is the best part of your job?
Customer service, dealing with the public, teaching kids.
What has been the impact of Hollywood and films on your business?
Really what Hollywood did with the push of “Hunger Games” was huge, but the combination of “Hunger Games,” “Brave” then the “Avengers,” on top of it all, three of them at once, just saturated the public with archery.
How can Nevada improve its small business climate?
Allow us to focus our niche, our habit, our drive to better get it out there in the public eye. The obvious thing is to watch the taxes, make sure we don’t overpay.
Do you think Las Vegas supports archery as a sport?
I’d love to see Vegas do a little bit more with archery. Las Vegas is a place for finals. We have the rodeo finals, we do have the World Archery Festival — which is a final leg — in town, but it’s kind of a cumbersome, enclosed environment. I’d like to see that expand to a natural, nationally televised type thing. I’d like to see more of an updated shooting facility. Clark County Shooting Park has a nice facility, but there are some things that could have been done a lot better.
