    • The Container Store donated $16,500, a portion of the sales from its grand opening weekend in May, to the Junior League of Las Vegas. The Container Store sells storage and organization products, and the Las Vegas location is the company’s 55th. The Junior League is a charitable organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism and improving the community.

    • Henderson’s firefighters and police officers are reaching out to Henderson businesses asking them to display awareness posters and distribute ribbons for the “Check Your Seats in the Heat ... Because Heat Kills” campaign. The campaign aims to spread awareness and remind motorists of the dangers of leaving children and pets in hot vehicles during the summer.

    • The Las Vegas Hospitality Association raised more than $15,000 for local scholarships and charities at its annual fundraising golf tournament at Cascata Golf Club on May 31. Over the past 20 years, LVHA has raised more than $770,000.

    • Silver State Schools Credit Union representatives donated $15,000 to the Children’s Miracle Network hospitals of St. Rose Dominican Hospitals in Las Vegas. The Children’s Miracle Network has provided life-saving equipment and services for sick children since 1996.

    • The PENTA Building Group raised $90,000 for the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation and the Women’s Development Center at its annual charity golf tournament at Revere Golf Club. Each organization received $45,000.

    • Gallagher-Kaiser, a specialty and custom builder, is donating space, utilities and other amenities to Family to Family Connection, which offers classes and play groups for toddlers, classes for parents and breast-feeding support for mothers.

    • Volunteers in Medicine of Southern Nevada, a nonprofit group dedicated to providing the uninsured with access to preventative and comprehensive medical care, presented 100 Southern Nevada families with $500 gift cards June 23. The donation was part of a $1 million give by the United Way of Southern Nevada. The gift cards were distributed at the Boys and Girls Club on South Lindell Road. Volunteers in Medicine has scheduled its annual fundraising ball for Oct. 6.

    • The Las Vegas Hospitality Association donated $500 to the Dave Rice Foundation, which focuses on health education and support for people with developmental disorders, including autism.

    • Mike Peterson, of the Henderson financial services firm Edward Jones, was recently recognized by the company with a Spirit of Caring Award designed to recognize financial advisors who exemplify the values, culture and spirit of giving back.

    • Aid for AIDS of Nevada sent 17 children on the nonprofit group’s annual Camp Courage trip for a week of fun and activities at The Laurel Foundation’s program in Angelus Oaks, CA. Camp Laurel provides participants a free week of camp.

    • The Southern Nevada affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure granted more than $160,000 to the O’Callaghan Resource Integrated Oncology Network Foundation. The grant is intended to help breast cancer patients currently receiving treatment in Southern Nevada pay their household bills and to help uninsured women afford mammograms.

    • Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada has received a $25,000 donation from International Gaming Technology for its Meals on Wheels Program. Meals on Wheels offers nutritionally-balanced meals, dietary consultation and overall support to homebound seniors. Catholic Charities also received a $50,000 grant from The Walmart Foundation and the Nevada Advisory Council to support its Social Services Community Food Pantry, which helps feed children from low-income homes during summer break when they do not have access to the federally-funded National School Lunch Program.

    • An uninsured Southern Nevada man and an uninsured woman have received free medically necessary surgeries from Helping Hands Surgical Care, a nonprofit organization founded by physician Kevin Petersen, who performed the surgery. Twenty free surgeries have been performed by HHSC since November.

    • As part of its Marquee Cares community program, Marquee Nightclub collected school supplies July 16 to benefit the Back2School program of HopeLink of Southern Nevada. More than 1,100 children have signed up for the program for the coming school year. Each child will be provided with a new backpack filled with school supplies.

    • RMI Management recently partnered with Cell Phones for Soldiers to conduct a cell phone donation drive. Proceeds collected from recycling the phones will be used to purchase calling cards for soldiers deployed overseas.

    • Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza on West Sahara held a July 19 event to benefit HELP of Southern Nevada. The restaurant donated 20 percent of proceeds from patrons who brought in a designated flyer.

    • Dwain Frazier was recognized with an Allstate Foundation “Agency Hands in the Community” award for his commitment to community service. The award comes with a $1,000 grant to the Galex Foundation. The program recognizes Allstate agents’ community volunteerism and provides financial support to organizations.

    • The Epicurean Charitable Foundation, a nonprofit group comprised of 25 Las Vegas food and beverage professionals, has selected four high school students to receive full scholarships to UNLV. Board members will mentor the students throughout their academic careers and help place them in internships and jobs.

    • The El Cortez hotel and the Moonridge Group collaborated to help renovate the historic Las Vegas Academy on July 14, as part of the Downtown Cares program. Volunteers cleaned, painted and gardened in the school’s courtyard and also installed a piece of public art created by Miguel Rodriguez. Downtown Cares is a grassroots effort to uplift historic downtown Las Vegas by organizing area residents, businesses and visitors for neighborhood service days.

    • Sixty employees of Commercial Roofers Inc. recently donated a day of their wages, which equalled more than $16,000, to Convoy of Hope, which helps feed children around the world.

    • MGM Resorts International executives and employees made surprise visits and unannounced check presentations in June to nonprofit groups that won MGM Resorts Foundation grants this year. The Clark County Commission proclaimed July 17 “MGM Resorts Foundation Day.” This year is the 10th anniversary of the employee-directed foundation, which supports charities through employee donations and community grants. Employees pledged to give more than $4.7 million this year.

    • WorldBed collaborated with the state of Nevada, the city of Las Vegas, local chapters of the Salvation Army and Catholic Charities and other local charities to distribute 2,000 mattresses to homeless shelters around Las Vegas. In conjunction with the start of Project Beds for America, WorldBed introduced a mattress suitable for bunk beds in transitional living shelters. In March, the organization shipped more than 500 of its beds to the South and Midwest after storms displaced thousands of residents. WorldBed launched Project Beds for America in Las Vegas in July, in conjunction with the annual Home Furnishings Market at the World Market Center.

    • Forty-four volunteers helped Camp To Belong Nevada reunite 89 young people in foster care with their siblings for a camping experience at the end of June. The siblings came from across the state of Nevada and from out of state.

    • Helping Hands of Vegas Valley received a $7,000 donation and 500 pounds of food from the Las Vegas offices of Wyndham Resorts International. The donation will help fund the organization’s food pantry, which feeds an average of 355 low-income clients a month, as well as support the group’s transportation services for homebound seniors and pay for respite care vouchers for senior caregivers.

    • HELP of Southern Nevada will collect supplies for school-aged clients at its 1640 E. Flamingo Road headquarters from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays until Sept. 13. The group hopes to fill backpacks for each child with $35 worth of school items. More information and online donation forms are available at www.helpsonv.org.

    • A two-mile walk and three-mile run will be held Sept. 29 at the UNLV Track and Field Stadium to benefit the 21st Century C.A.R.E. Foundation and UsTOO Prostate Cancer Support Group. Both nonprofit groups are dedicated to helping cancer patients locally and nationally.
