Several local law firms and attorneys are recognized in the 2013 edition of U.S. News – Best Lawyers “Best Law Firms” list. Rankings are determined based on information from the law firms, feedback from clients and attorneys at other firms in the same practice areas. Tier 1 rankings are the highest available. Honored for Southern Nevada offices were:

    • MassMedia Corporate Communications, a public relations, advertising and marketing firm in Henderson, collected 12,450 nonperishable food items during its annual Thanksgiving food drive to benefit Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada. Dozens of local businesses, organizations and community members contributed food and money to make the two-week drive a success. The city of Henderson, for example, filled more than 100 boxes in 48 hours.

    • The Foundation Assisting Seniors partnered with Henderson’s Elks Lodge to donate three electric wheelchairs to the Southern Nevada Muscular Dystrophy Association. The MDA is a nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding research. The association also provides health care and support services, advocacy and education focused on more than 40 neuromuscular diseases.

    • Winder Farms, a home-delivery grocery company, raised more than $2,400 for Susan G. Komen for the Cure through sales of its popular strawberry milk. Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit the Utah and Las Vegas affiliates of the group, which supports breast cancer screening and treatment programs and research.

    • The Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth, a nonprofit group dedicated to helping homeless teenagers in Southern Nevada, collected fast food and grocery gift card vouchers as part of its sixth annual Plastic Food Drive. The items will be used to feed homeless youths through the holiday season.

    • CBRE’s second annual “National Shoe Collection Drive,” held in conjunction with Soles4Souls, collected 15,330 pairs of shoes for people in need. The company’s corporate philanthropy program CBRE Cares also donated $7,668 to Soles4Souls, the equivalent of 7,668 pair of shoes.

    • The Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas received a $19,800 grant from Ross Stores to support Power Hour this school year. Program staff and volunteers help students with homework, tutoring and learning activities in a clubhouse setting to help them become self-learners and build their academic skills.

    • Nevada State Bank helped collect professional attire for Foothill High School’s “Professional Dress Closet.” The clothes are available for students to wear to job interviews. Donated items included suits, jackets, shirts, blouses, slacks, skirts, ties and shoes.

    • The Clark County Association of Health Underwriters’ adopted school, Charlotte and Jerry Keller Elementary, received a $1,000 donation from Sam’s Club as part of its Teacher’s Reward Program. Twenty $50 gift certificates will be awarded to the elementary school’s teachers. The Association of Health Underwriters donates schools supplies, snacks and clothes to the school.

    • Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Nevada handed out more than 100 turkeys and Thanksgiving treats to families affected by cancer. The “Gobble Gobble packages” included turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberries, marshmallows and dessert. It was the organization’s12th year handing out the packages.

    • The Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort raised almost $20,000 for the Mt. Charleston Volunteer Fire Department, National Ski Patrol’s avalanche awareness programs and the Outside Las Vegas Foundation at “Who’s On Board,” its 50th anniversary celebration. More than 250 guests attended the event at the Amanda Harris Gallery of Contemporary Art and the Lady Silvia wine bar. The resort challenged 50 local artists to create original pieces using snowboard cutouts as canvases. A variety of graffiti artists, sculptors, painters and tattoo artists also donated pieces that were auctioned.

    • The Las Vegas office of Holland & Hart sent 300 stuffed stockings to members of the military living overseas. The law firm filled the stockings with socks, food, toiletries, books and puzzles with help from employees, clients, family and friends. Blue Star Mothers shipped them to local soldiers serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.

    • A suit drive organized by the Hero School, which aims to end homelessness, chronic unemployment and academic disengagement in Southern Nevada, brought in 218 suits, 117 pairs of shoes and 210 other items of clothing for people in need. Organizers also collected $1,796 in donations, $5,000 in scholarships and $140,000 in pledges for 2013.

    • Forte Specialty Contractors built an accessible playground at the Miracle League’s Baseball Field. The Miracle League of Las Vegas transformed the traditional baseball field into a state-of-the-art, wheelchair-friendly facility where disabled athletes can play baseball.

    • The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino and AEG Live raised $17,850 for Hurricane Sandy victims through a Red Cross text-to-donate campaign at the Guns N’ Roses “Appetite for Democracy” shows at the Joint. Hotel guests and concert-goers contributed $12,850 to the fundraiser. Hard Rock and AEG donated an additional $5,000.

    • City National Bank partnered for the fifth consecutive year with Barnes and Noble for a multistate book drive in Nevada, California, New York, Tennessee and Georgia.

    • Jewish Women International and the Verizon Foundation celebrated the opening of a new children’s library at the Shade Tree shelter for homeless and abused women and children.

    • Distinctive Homes and PSI World joined for the 15th annual Giving Day Festival at Arturo Cambeiro Elementary School, where more than half the students are homeless. Children and their families enjoyed carnival games, face painting, a warm meal, new pair of shoes, hooded sweatshirt, toys, hygiene items, a bag of non-perishable food items and of course, a visit from Santa Claus.

    • Pardee Homes donated more than $3,000 worth of items to the Shade Tree shelter. Employees shopped for items from a wish list provided by the shelter using money that was designated for a employee holiday party. Pardee has donated more than $100,000 to the Shade Tree since 1994.
