J.D. Calhoun, senior analyst for supplier diversity at Southwest Gas, was named Buyer of the Year by the Nevada Minority Supplier Development Council, which works to increase business for minority suppliers.
UNLV law professor Bret Birdsong was appointed deputy solicitor for land resources at the U.S. Department of Interior in Washington, D.C. He counsels the Bureau of Land Management regarding almost 250 million acres of public land, including about 70 percent of Nevada’s land.

The Nevada 150 planning committee selected Esther Carter as executive director of the state’s sesquicentennial celebration. Carter has 16 years of experience in event planning, advertising and public relations. The yearlong celebration launches Oct. 31, Nevada Day, and runs through Oct. 31, 2014.
