Megabus returning with trips between Las Vegas and L.A.

Megabus, the discount intercity bus service that began a 10-month run of service between Los Angeles and Las Vegas in 2007, is coming back in December, a month after Greyhound modified its schedule to include five daily express buses.

“Megabus.com, which previously served West Coast residents in 2007-2008, has returned based on customer demand,” said Mike Alvich, the company’s vice president of marketing and public relations.

The company will introduce the new service by offering $1 tickets for all seats between Dec. 12-19 for all new routes, which include Las Vegas to Los Angeles and Riverside, Calif., as well as routes in San Francisco, Oakland, Sacramento and San Jose, Calif.; and Reno.

Megabus regularly offers a limited number of $1 tickets on all trips for travelers who book early. The regular maximum fare for the Las Vegas to Los Angeles trip is $15.50 each way.

The travel time on the four trips to and from Los Angeles is estimated at six hours, and buses make a stop in Riverside.

Megabus has leased space at the RTC South Strip Transfer Terminal near Sunset Road and Gillespie Street for departures and arrivals.

Britain’s Stagecoach Group launched Megabus in the United States in 2006, and the company grew a following on the East Coast, selling 22 million tickets with its 81-seat double-decker buses with cloth-upholstered seats, onboard restrooms, free WiFi, power outlets, seatbelts and wheelchair accessibility.

But when Megabus first came to Las Vegas in 2007, the route lasted only 10 months before ending operations in June 2008 because of lack of ridership.

In addition to Greyhound, Lux Bus America also offers Southern California express bus service between Las Vegas and Anaheim.
