Bryant, the 18-time NBA All-Star who won five championships and became one of the greatest basketball players of his generation during a 20-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers, died in a helicopter crash Sunday, Jan. 26, 2020. Gianna also died in the crash. She was 13.

Local festivities surrounding the unveiling of a new Las Vegas tourism slogan have been postponed after the unexpected death of basketball great Kobe Bryant, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority announced this afternoon.

Along with the announcement of a new campaign through a television commercial during the Grammy Awards broadcast Sunday evening, the LVCVA had planned to showcase the campaign at a number of Las Vegas landmarks. Instead, those plans were dashed out of respect for Bryant, a former Los Angeles Lakers star who lost his life in a helicopter crash this morning..

“The hearts of everyone in Las Vegas are with the families and friends of those lost, with all of Los Angeles and with his fans around the world,” said Steve Hill, the authority’s CEO, in a statement on Bryant’s death.

The authority said it looked into canceling the television ad, but it was “already placed in rotation” and couldn’t be withdrawn.

The new campaign is replacing the longtime “What Happens Here, Stays Here” tourism campaign, which was introduced in 2003.

Bryant, an 18-time NBA all-star, and his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, were among those killed when a helicopter crashed Sunday about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.
