Avionne Allgood comes to Simplot Games

Pocatello, Idaho – Keep a lookout for the national high school record holder in the javelin at this year’s Simplot Games.
Avionne Allgood, a senior at Legacy High School in North Las Vegas, Nev., plans on returning a second year to the Games, which will be held February 16-18, at Idaho State University’s Holt Arena.
The javelin is an outdoor event, but the weighted shoulder throw, which is nicknamed the “indoor javelin,” makes its debut at the Games this year.
Allgood, who has been training with the weighted shoulder throw, said she likes it because, “It saves a lot of my shoulder and arms and you still get the basic fundamentals of technique.”
“You don’t have to kill your arm all the time,” she added.
Chris Vogel, the inventor of the weighted shoulder throw, has trained with Allgood and said she is “one of the most under-rated throwing athletes in the U.S. right now.”
He continued saying she comes from Nevada where the javelin is not a sanctioned event and “her coaching has been diluted by that fact.”
Vogel said Allgood is tough and as an athlete, “she is uncommonly dedicated and uncompromising.”
According to Vogel, in addition to holding the U.S. national high school record for the javelin, Allgood had a fourth place finish in the U.S. Track and Field Championships and a tenth place finish at the Pan American Games. Allgood’s personal record in the javelin is 176-8.
Allgood is a versatile thrower and is no stranger to the other two throwing events at the Games, the shot put and the weight throw. She said she will come to the Games to have fun and do her best.
Beyond the Simplot Games, Allgood said she aspires to go to the Olympic trials this summer and have a good throwing career in college.
More than 1,800 athletes will come from across the U.S. and Canada to participate in the 34th annual Simplot Games. Simplot Games remains the nation’s premier high school indoor track and field event. Sponsored by the J.R. Simplot Company since 1979, the Simplot Games are held at Idaho State University’s Holt Arena in Pocatello, Idaho.
