UNLV Alumnus courts Stephens Press on first of children’s book series on experiences at UNLV Runnin’ Rebels games
Mark A. Benjamin, class of ’97, recently provided an exclusive submission to the Stephens Press for publication consideration of his recent children’s book manuscript. This manuscript is a work of children’s fiction inspired by true moments in UNLV basketball history. The initial work is centered on the excitement, especially for children during a first experience at a Rebel game, as well as the spirit of the local community around the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels. The manuscript, if published, will be the first of its kind in the Las Vegas market.
Benjamin a life member of the UNLV alumni association and longtime supporter of the university and the athletic programs, hopes that this initial work will be the first in a series of UNLV spirit building and overall character building of multiple children’s titles to support the university’s unwavering efforts of higher education and to promote children’s literacy in Nevada. Benjamin anticipates many author reading events and book signings to support these efforts. Benjamin believes that giving back to the community that has given so much to him is just a natural way to live. “The plan, upon finding a suitable publisher, is to dedicate a majority of my proceeds of the book series to the Rebel Athletic Fund and Spread the Word Nevada.” offered Benjamin
“As a high school sophomore from upstate New York, I fell in love with the spirit of the championship Runnin’ Rebels team, and that appeal was not unique . What is unique is that it led me to my local public library to research this unknown educational institution on the other side of the country, and it led to my application and matriculation to the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. It led to being honored with the exclusive Earl and Hazel Wilson scholarship – a 4 year award, and my successful graduation from the school which I wish to share my endearment with all who will enjoy this book,” added Benjamin.
Excerpt from Book:
I was 7 when my uncle took me to my first UNLV Runnin’ Rebels Basketball game. It was a night game, and the first time my mother let me go out on a school night.

“Uncle Larry, please only nachos and a hot dog or hamburger.” called Henry’s mother.
It seemed like forever to get to the game. But on the way, it seemed like every sign along the way said “Go Rebels!”
