GOVERNOR APPOINTS GUTHRIE TO NEVADA’S TOP EDUCATION POST

New superintendent of instruction believes school districts take a shortsighted approach to Nevada’s K-12 school funding

LAS VEGAS, NV -- Governor Sandoval has appointed James W. Guthrie as the state’s new superintendent of public instruction. While Dr. Guthrie’s 23-page curriculum vitae is impressive, his ultraconservative approach to education and K-12 school funding will create a difficult challenge for our school districts and, ultimately, for the delivery of a quality education in our state.

In a book he co-authored, Dr. Guthrie writes about how one might conclude that our nation’s schools suffer from a perpetual fiscal crisis, yet somehow manage to open in the fall. Dr. Guthrie has obviously not spent any time in the school districts afflicted by these budget shortfalls. He needs to see that while schools open at the beginning of the school year, those schools are barely hanging on – no textbooks or supplies, overcrowded classrooms and safety hazards, just to name a few.

Dr. Guthrie comes to Nevada at a time when school districts have had to cut programs and resources to work with their shrinking budgets, Nevada ranks dead last in the nation in investment in our students’ education, and when, to avoid further weakening Nevada’s public schools, Governor Sandoval is moving to extend expiring taxes. If the state follows Dr. Guthrie’s school funding approach, it will be devastating for our students’ education.

We invite Dr. Guthrie to tour Clark County public schools with us and learn firsthand the many challenges facing these schools when they work with shoestring budgets.
