Johnson Jacobson Wilcox CPAs Launches 2013 Art Contest

Representatives of Johnson Jacobson Wilcox CPAs and the One11 design firm met May 23 to judge more than 60 pieces of artwork submitted by third, fourth and fifth graders from Lowman Elementary School in Las Vegas.

Since 2005, the CPA firm has selected one elementary school, based on need, to participate in its annual art contest.

During a school assembly on June 3, the winning student will be brought on stage and given a basket of art supplies for continuing his or her creativity. His or her art will be used to illustrate the cover of a card the firm sends to clients. Lowman Elementary School will also be awarded $5,000 as a donation from Johnson Jacobson Wilcox CPAs.

Kristi Overgaard, president of One11, has been participating since the contest began. According to Overgaard, she determines whether, "the students started with a concept and that they really heard the direction of (depicting) ‘why I love living in America.’ I see what the students came up with their concepts. I also look for color, clarity and how well they communicated." She admits that when she views the entries, "It’s our favorite thing to do during the year. We see how it is different each year. You can tell that the teachers explained the directions differently so some years it is a little darker and some years it is happy, so you can see what is happening in the community."

The art contest is part of the CPA firm's community outreach and the artwork illustrates a card sent to clients.

William Hinsdale, staff accountant for Johnson Jacobson Wilcox CPAs and one of the contest judges, said, “I participated in these kind of contests when I was in elementary school so I understand the love that goes into creating them.”
