International Trade Summit Las Vegas 2013

INTERNATIONAL TRADE SUMMIT LAS VEGAS 2013
On November 12, 2013, the Korean-American Chamber of Commerce, Las Vegas (KACCLV) and the Korean-American Chamber of Commerce, USA (KACCUSA), jointly hosted the First Annual International Trade Summit Las Vegas (ITS) at the Trump International Hotel (Trump).

In partnership with Korean organizations such as the Korea International Trade Association (KITA), the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Los Angeles (Consulate), the Korean Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) and United States/Nevada organizations such as the U.S. Commercial Service the trade arm of the U.S. Department of Commerce, Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED), and the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance (LVGEA) the event kicked off. With a theme focused on “Where the World Goes for Financial Freedom” based on the recently signed U.S. – Korea Free Trade Agreement (FTA), the ITS event focused on providing resources on how to strengthen business and economic relationships between the two countries and specifically with Las Vegas and the State of Nevada.

On November 13, 2013 at 9 a.m., with the support of eight major corporate sponsors including Las Vegas technology company—Switch, UPS®, Korean Air, and Wells Fargo, approximately 130 attendees gathered at the Trump’s Madison Hall for the welcome ceremony. The ceremony started with a welcome video by Nevada Senator Harry Reid and Nevada Congressman Joe Heck and opening remarks by the Deputy Consul General of the Republic of Korea—Ki-Sun Bang and Mayor Pro Tem of the City of Las Vegas—Stavros Anthony. The ceremony concluded with remarks by Jeannie Kim, President of KACCLV and Frank Kim, President of KACCUSA and a delivery of a certificate of excellence to the Korean-American Chamber of Commerce, Las Vegas at the direction of Governor Sandoval.

With a focus towards international trade and globalization, attendees were able to learn about the Nevada and Korean business environments and specifically how businesses can safely trade and invest with each respective country, tax implications of trade, and valuable resources of how to find qualified business partners under the FTA. The speakers included Young Hwa Sung, President of KITA, Dong Hyun Park, President of KOTRA, Andrew Edlefsen, Nevada Director of the U.S. Commercial Service, Kristopher Sanchez, Director of International Trade for GOED, and Tom Skancke, President and CEO of LVGEA.

Amidst all the seminars, workshops and exhibitions that lasted until 5 p.m., Korean Air which provides direct flights from Las Vegas to Incheon, Korea three times a week (M, W, F) raffled a round-trip airline ticket to the excitement of all the attendees. Bo Ram Shim, Manager at Korean Air stated “as Korean Air is the only airline to provide a direct flight from Las Vegas to Korea, our role is to bridge the gap between Las Vegas and Korea and we promise to do our best to provide the best experience for Las Vegas and Korean businesses.”

As gracious hosts who provided the penthouse suite for the cocktail party and the five course dinner, Matthew Brimhall, Vice President & Broker of the Trump, also provided a special invitation in promoting the hotel to all chamber members by stating “I promise to provide world-class service to all members of the Korean-American Chamber of Commerce and Korean businesses visiting Las Vegas and our hotel and wish your business success.”

Dong Hyun Park, stated that “because the signing of the FTA and a positive upgrade to Korea’s credit rating by multiple credit rating agencies, the ITS event is a great opportunity to attract foreign investors to Korea.”

Kristopher Sanchez stated that “after the signing of the FTA and the positive reaction to Governor Brian Sandoval’s first trade mission delegation to Korea in 2012, you can expect Nevada to actively support Nevada business in international trade and to attract international businesses to Nevada.”

Tom Skancke stated that “with the signing of the FTA and the trend towards globalization, Las Vegas sees an opportunity to not only be known as a world-class tourist destination but is also transitioning into a world-class economic trade center. Las Vegas has a business friendly environment and I hope we can continue to showcase Las Vegas to Korean businesses and the world and also hope the ITS event continues to grow and am thankful for this opportunity to speak.”

Jeannie Kim stated that “this summit, enabled by the FTA, was provided as a resource for Korean based businesses to network with Nevada government officials and organizations to explore opportunities to expand and trade with Nevada and for Nevada based businesses the same opportunities to network with Korean government officials and organizations in expanding and trading with Korea. As this was the First International Trade Summit, I want to thank all those who supported and participated and hope to continue to promote Las Vegas and assist those Korean and Nevada businesses the best I can.”

The Second Annual International Trade Summit Las Vegas is planned for September 2014.
