Provider for Cancer Screenings to the Uninsured

Volunteers in Medicine of Southern Nevada (VMSN) is now a provider of breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screenings made available through a CDC-funded grant. This is a significant achievement for VMSN, Southern Nevada’s free clinic serving residents who cannot afford the high cost of health insurance. Patients of VMSN earn 200% or less of the Federal Poverty Level. They often struggle to put food on the table or have found themselves out of work. Many go without any health care.

Through the CDC grant, screenings such as mammograms, pap smears and colonoscopies are provided at no cost to our patients. “For many years now, technological advances have allowed for early detection of these particular cancers and unfortunately the uninsured have not had access to these types of simple screenings” says Dr. Laura Culley, Medical Director of Volunteers in Medicine of Southern Nevada. “There are a small number of cancers that, with modern technology, we can successfully detect at an early stage and significantly increase cure rates.” Breast, cervical and colorectal cancer are among this group.

Dr. Culley says, “Our uninsured patients now have the same opportunity for early diagnosis as people with health insurance, rather than waiting for a trip to the emergency room to discover symptoms developing into late-stage cancer. We are proud and excited that not only do we provide quality medical care, but have an opportunity for early cancer detection.”

ABOUT VOLUNTEERS IN MEDICINE OF SOUTHERN NEVADA
Volunteers in Medicine of Southern Nevada (VMSN) is a nonprofit, volunteer-run medical clinic that fosters a “culture of caring” by providing free health care and wellness services to the working uninsured and unemployed residents of Southern Nevada. VMSN was established in 2008 by a group of local health care professionals and community leaders in order to provide access to medical care to Clark County’s underserved residents. Inside its Paradise Park clinic, VMSN provides eligible patients with adult and pediatric primary care, preventive and acute care, well newborn checkup and immunizations, and diagnostic tests and medications.
