June Auction features Rare 1960s Apollo Command Module Block 1 Mock-Up Spacecraft
ST. LOUIS, MO – May 28, 2014 – Regency-Superior (www.regencystamps.com), one of the nation’s leading Auctioneers, announced today that its latest Space and Aviation auction to be held June 4, 2014 in St. Louis, MO features several unique artifacts from the collection of former Nevada Lt. Governor and avid collector, Dr. Lonnie Hammargren, M.D. including what is believed to be a 1960s Apollo Command Module Block 1 Mock-up with an estimate of $400,000 - $600,000.
Dr. Hammargren, Nevada’s 31st Lieutenant Governor served several years as a NASA flight surgeon caring for the Apollo astronauts, is as well-known as a collector of all sorts of memorabilia including U.S. and Nevada history, Hollywood props and Las Vegas signs, and countless other unique and unusual items. His collection has been featured in numerous publications and television shows including the Travel, History and Discovery Channels and “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.” In 2010 his home was voted number #1 in the category “Weird, Wonderful Homes” on CNBC Cable Network.
The Apollo Command Module Block 1 Mock-up was acquired by Hammargren in the mid-1970s following the ending of the Apollo Space Program and has remained in his possession for nearly 40 years. Hammargren’s mock-up is believed to be an early Block design built in the early 1960s. Block 1 spacecraft were limited-production flight-weight spacecraft used for flight systems development and qualification. Several dozen of these mock-ups spacecraft survived and are primarily located in museums, schools and other public locations. Only a few remain in private hands.
“The spacecraft among other items have been enjoyed by thousands of guests to my home, which I have dubbed the “Hammargren Home of Nevada History,” Hammargren states. “For years I have welcomed school children and the public to enjoy the collection. However since my retirement from Neurosurgery as few years ago I’ve had to cut back on the tours and events. I hope that the Apollo Mock-up and the other items Regency-Superior is featuring in their June auction will be able to bring as much joy to others as they have me.”
In addition to the Apollo Spacecraft, Regency-Superior is also offering selected pieces of Russian Space art from Hammargren’s collection including a one-of-a-kind 1995 oil painting of his hometown by Russian Cosmonaut Alexei Leonov, the first man to walk in space. Other items include a handwritten letter by Howard Hughes est $15,000-$20,000 and a 1940s Pratt & Whitney R-4360 WASP Major Engine est at $35,000-$50,000.
Since 1929, Regency-Superior has been one of the nation’s leading Auctioneers specializing in the sale of classic postage Stamps & Postal History, Coins & Currency, Sports, Space and Hollywood Memorabilia.
