Black Aerospace Leaders Joining in Las Vegas to Develop Current, Future Professionals

IBAC Promotes Education, History, Diversity, Careers

The International Black Aerospace Council (IBAC) will bring together more than 1,000 pilots, ground crew, military aviators, air traffic controllers and other workers in aviation-related industries for the 2012 IBAC Member Organizations Co-Conventions. The conference will be held from July 30 through August 3, 2012 at the Las Vegas Hotel (formerly Las Vegas Hilton), 3000 Paradise Road, Las Vegas, Nevada.

This is only the second time in history that IBAC, a partnership of seven leading black aerospace organizations, will hold a joint annual conference. The first co-convention was held in 2006. IBAC member organizations include the Bessie Coleman Aerospace Legacy, Black Pilots of America,
NAI‐ Black Wings in Aviation, National Black Coalition of Federal Aviation Employees, Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals, Tuskegee Airmen, Inc., and US Army Black Aviation Association.

The conference features classroom lectures for participants in all disciplines of the aviation industry. These sessions will focus on leadership and skills development, continuing education, and career strategies. The educational features will extend beyond IBAC members to benefit the Southern Nevada community.

“We believe in contributing to every community we visit and will offer Las Vegas residents and
visitors learning opportunities that are fun for the whole family,” said T. Len Nevels, Colonel (Retired), U.S. Air Force.

Many conference activities are designed to introduce youth to the aviation industry. Special features of the IBAC co-conventions include:

• A career day where 150 high school juniors and seniors will hear from a variety of professionals, including the Original Tuskegee Airmen—the nation’s first black fighter pilots--who helped to win World War II.

• An interactive exhibit hall--free to the public—featuring hands-on exhibits, flight simulation exercises, a chance to hear from history-makers and a marketplace with local and national vendors
• IBAC “Time Machine” sessions allowing the audience to interact with Original Tuskegee
Airmen (Wednesday through Friday).

• Scholarship fundraiser to benefit youth seeking tuition assistance from IBAC member organizations.

IBAC member organizations serve as a clearinghouse for the exchange of information, ideas and employment prospects for people of color in aerospace careers. The organization provides information and resources regarding scholarships and educational opportunities for youth interested in aerospace careers.
