Second Marie Callender’s restaurant closes

The bankrupt Marie Callender’s restaurant and bakery chain has closed a second Las Vegas location as it works to trim costs.

Sunday was the last day of business for the restaurant at 4800 S. Eastern Ave., near Tropicana Avenue.

Perkins & Marie Callender’s Inc. filed for Chapter 11 reorganization in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware in June and at that time closed a Marie Callender’s at 4875 W. Flamingo Road.

Four Marie Callender’s remain open in Las Vegas and Henderson as the company tries to reorganize its finances.

By Las Vegas standards, the Eastern Avenue location was ancient, having operated there since 1977.

The company today reiterated a statement by CEO J. Trungale that, "the process of identifying underperforming locations remains ongoing and will continue throughout the Chapter 11 case."

"A decision regarding the S. Eastern Ave. location was arrived at following store-level analyses of historical financial performance, local market conditions and cost structure,’’ the Memphis-based company said in a statement.

Employees were notified of the impending closure last month and were given the opportunity and encouraged to apply for positions at other Marie Callender's locations, a spokeswoman said.
