The Southern Nevada Health District announced its annual Public Health Heroes, recognition given to individuals or organizations whose efforts positively affect the health and well-being of the community. The 2012 Public Health Heroes are: Collaborative Software Initiative/CSI, an Oregon-based company that has worked with the health district’s office of epidemiology on a project to modernize the electronic systems used for disease investigation and epidemiologic analysis; Jeff Hahn, an investigations manager with Boyd Gaming who has worked with the health district to meet the needs of the community in the event of a public health emergency; the UNLV Athletic Department, which participated in a chronic disease prevention and health promotion, and initiated a program called The Coach’s Challenge to encourage children to make healthy meal choices and become more physically active; and Family Court Judge William O. Voy of the Clark County 8th Judicial District, who has presided over three cases brought by the health district regarding tuberculosis patients who were not in compliance with their medication regimen, which is required by law, and who has taken steps to ensure that patients and their families are adequately informed on the issue of noncompliance without delaying the cases.

AIA Nevada presented the Unbuilt Design Awards as part of its 2012 Architecture Week celebration, recognizing students, interns, associates, and licensed architects. Submissions included a total of 42 projects that remain unbuilt. JMA Architecture Studio received an award for Corn Creek Visitor Center. Merit awards were presented in the academic category for “New Museum of Art” by Pradeep Kumar Uppari, Assoc. AIA, and in the unbuilt category to assemblage Studio for “QLAB” and to + One Architects for “Christian Street Residence 2.” Citation awards in the unbuilt category went to “Bodega” by Hamilton Anderson Associates and “Great Full Garden Café” by Van Woert Bigotti Architects.

Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc., will hold a Meet the General Contractors event May 24 at the Plaza. It is intended to help connect construction industry sub-contractors with general contractors. Suppliers, consultants, developers, architects and service providers will attend. Contracting firms also will be available to discuss forthcoming projects, bid documents and bidding qualifications. Virgen Inc., a marketing, public relations and creative arts firm, won several honors in the annual Healthcare Advertising Awards competition. It received a gold award in the television advertising category for its work with Southwest Medical Associates, and a silver award for its “Senior Dimensions” calendar and merit recognition in the category of Total Advertising Campaign for work done on behalf of Sierra Nevada Spectrum. Entries were evaluated by a national panel for creativity, quality, message effectiveness, consumer appeal, graphic design and overall impact. There were almost 4,000 entries.

Steljes Cardiology, a full-service cardiology practice, diagnostic sleep center and clinical research center, has earned accreditation in echocardiography and nuclear cardiology from the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission. Echocardiography refers to the process of taking a sonogram of the heart and is routinely used in the diagnosis and management of patients with suspected or known heart diseases.
