City National Bank hosted an author visit with students at Basic High School in Henderson. Jennifer Lynn Barnes, author of a new book entitled “Police Line,” spoke to approximately 50 English and creative writing students about the life of an author. She also signed copies of her new book that City National purchased and donated to students who attended the presentation. The bank’s author program is as part of its “Reading is the Way Up” literacy program, which is also in partnership with Barnes & Noble.

Lavonne Lewis
Phillip Hollon is the director of social services and Lavonne Lewis is business manager for the Salvation Army Southern Nevada. Hollon comes to the Salvation Army from Catholic Charities, where he served for nearly 10 years under Monsignor Patrick Leary. Lewis previously served as interim president and CEO with the Las Vegas Urban League.

Franz Kallao
Franz Kallao joined the board of directors at the Nevada Blind Children’s Foundation. Kallao is the vice president of operations at the Mirage. He is a past board member of the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth and the Nevada Hotel and Lodging Association.
Dr. Chris Chiodo has joined the board of directors at the Nevada Blind Children’s Foundation. Chiodo is the founder and CEO of the Vision Centers, which has four locations in Southern Nevada.
The Riviera, along with partners CoachLift Sales and COP 4x4 School of Automotive Excellence, honored wounded warrior Jace Badia and family as part of Veterans Day. Badia lost a leg and battled other injuries while in Afghanistan in 2006. He spent 29 months recuperating at Walter Reed Hospital before returning to active duty in Iraq and Kuwait. He has received two Purple Hearts, three Army Commendations and one Army Achievement, plus a host of other awards. He was presented a loaded Jeep, specially painted by Tom Prewitt from Department of Customz, retrofitted with appropriate hand controls provided by the Ability Center, and a CoachLift person lift provided by CoachLift Sales.
Todd Vonbastiaans, the owner of local lighting company Alios, gifted the Contemporary Arts Center six months of rent-free space to hold its contemporary art exhibitions as a gift for the center’s 25th anniversary. The center moved to Alios at 1217 S. Main Street, and still remains within the downtown Las Vegas Arts District.
More than 400 people attended the Friends of the IDF annual Las Vegas gala, which raised more than $400,000. The funds go toward helping the men and women who serve in the Israel Defense Forces. The gala also honored Arlene and Jerome Blut for their commitment to Israel and its soldiers.
