The California is getting a makeover.

Boyd Gaming announced today that it was launching a renovation and redesign of the downtown Las Vegas resort, starting with the casino floor and other public areas. Once those improvements are completed, workers will move on to a redesign and upgrade of nearly 500 hotel rooms along with additional food and beverage projects.

A news release from Boyd did not include the exact cost of the multimillion-dollar project. The new look will incorporate a modern Hawaiian colonial design, the company said, a reflection of the property's longstanding emphasis on attracting visitors from Hawaii.

"As Boyd Gaming's 40th year comes to a close, we are proud to continue reinvesting in the place where our company was born: downtown Las Vegas," Bill Boyd, executive chairman of Boyd Gaming, said in the release. "The luxurious new look and feel … will offer our longtime guests an elevated new experience at the property they love. It will also provide first-time guests a new incentive to visit the Cal, and experience our legendary Spirit of Aloha."

Boyd also operates the Fremont and Main Street Station downtown.

"I'm grateful to Boyd Gaming for its continued reinvestment in Las Vegas Ward 5, and for its ongoing commitment to downtown Las Vegas," Las Vegas City Councilman Ricki Barlow said in the release.
