Gavin Wale’s late FG gives Coronado win at Las Vegas

Gavin Wale’s 38-yard field goal with less than three minutes to play tonight gave the Coronado High football team a 30-28 win against host Las Vegas High.

“The wind was really howling out there and that’s no chip shot,” Coronado coach Bill Froman said.

Andrew Montez recorded an interception on Las Vegas’ ensuing drive to secure the Coronado victory.

“Andrew had a ridiculous (interception) to ice the game. That’s the most ridiculous (interception) you’ll see in high school football,” Froman said.

Zac Holbert led the Coronado offense with 171 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries. Quarterback Carlos Perez returned to the lineup after missing the past two games with injury, and completed 3-of-4 passes and rushed for 65 yards and a touchdown.

Junior Semaj Bolin added a touchdown run for Coronado, which improves to 2-2 overall heading into the Southeast League opener next week against Foothill.
