Q+A: JASWANT TONY:

Tech entrepreneur supercharges lab work, plans to revolutionize industry

Jaswant Tony, founder and CEO of GoMeyra, poses for a portrait at MDX Labs in Las Vegas, NV, Monday Aug. 23, 2021. GoMeyra is a cloud based laboratory information management solution for companies.

In March of 2020, at the start of the pandemic, Jaswant Tony’s IT company was contracted to provide services to a local medical lab, helping with its technology needs.

“With COVID-19 ramping up and a lockdown in affect, I discovered that the lab’s information management system — or LIMS — was terribly inefficient, and after some research, I found it to be true for the bulk of labs across the country,” Tony said. “It quickly became clear to me that this was a main cause for the COVID testing bottleneck the U.S. was experiencing, and a solution to the systemic problem was desperately needed.”

Tony was inspired by the experience to launch GoMeyra.

“I wanted to help,” he said. “The technology most labs were using had become antiquated and exacerbated their lack of pandemic preparedness, rendering them unable to process tests quick enough during a public health crisis.”

Who were the first businesses with which you partnered?

One of the first local business owners to see the value in GoMeyra’s LIMS was James Murphy with ProAm Sports Medicine (formerly Athlete Advantage Medical) in Las Vegas. When I met him, he was struggling with managing the technology procedures for his practice and knew it was preventing his business from reaching its full potential. Testing was antiquated and taking too long to get results. Once he started using GoMeyra’s software, it was a game changer for him. He was able to expand his business nationwide, and now he has a thriving practice that serves clients across the country.

After partnering with Murphy, word started spreading about my new platform and, without even advertising, labs and medical practices from all over the country started approaching us to sign on.

What happens after the pandemic ends? Does your business have applications outside of an environment of mass public health testing?

We have plans at GoMeyra to continue revolutionizing the testing industry. We will soon launch software for other medical testing panels including toxicology, women’s and men’s health, food allergies and more.

Additionally, I’ve found that there are many other aspects of the health care industry that can use revamping, so we’re using the same ingenuity and technological expertise to challenge other sectors of the system in order to create more efficient and comprehensive platforms. In fact, we have a software product that we just introduced — a next-generation health care management platform, GoMeyra MD. It’s a suite of modules for medical professionals to comprehensively manage patient care and electronic health care records.

The first module we launched is a scheduler that provides doctors, practitioners and health care workers the ability to view and schedule tests, procedures or appointments in their queue, both online and in office. Later this year, we plan to debut electronic medical records management, billing, an insurance clearinghouse portal, and a proprietary virtual telehealth clinic.

What brought you to Southern Nevada, and what’s encouraged you to remain here?

I originally came to Las Vegas to work on technology for conventions. Many people may not realize that the convention business in Las Vegas brings in dozens of industry trade shows where future technology is introduced. What this actually provides is a unique opportunity to work on some of the most innovative systems in the industry. When these tech shows set up for a convention, there is a need for people “on the ground” to help facilitate the technology installs and, in essence, be a liaison between the tech company and the venue. It really is a unique opportunity to see the new “stuff” maybe even years before it is ever released to the public. That was a big draw for me to move to Las Vegas, and now, I have grown attached to the city and would not have started my business anywhere else.

What is the best business advice you’ve received?

Chuck Ley from Cornerstone Merchant Services gave me the best advice when I started GoMeyra. To paraphrase, he said: No matter what you do, the most important thing is revenue — if you focus on other things in your business and there is no revenue, then your business is not going anywhere and eventually you could be in trouble. Because of this advice, I did everything in my power to generate revenue. This mindset kept me focused and led me to concentrate on achieving revenue as a priority, which in turn allowed me to avoid any outside funding for GoMeyra. I am proud to say that we are self-funded and have been from the very beginning.

Apart from anything you’ve done recently, what’s been your proudest career accomplishment?

In my early days in the United States, I was in my 20s and working as a welder for a manufacturer. After a while, I started noticing that the way they were making certain products seemed inefficient. I announced to the company that I was going to build a robot to handle some of the welding, and like most people who try to change the system, I was told that it could never happen. I then proceeded to work after-hours on this new project. Within a few months, I was able to demonstrate my invention to the entire company and, needless to say, it shocked them. The naysayers were annoyed that I succeeded, but the owners were smart enough to recognize the advantage of my invention. What previously took two months to make was minimized to just two weeks. Not only that, but my innovation increased the quality of the products, which allowed the company to charge customers a higher price. Eventually, they made the use of my innovation mandatory for all the welders. I was so proud that I recognized a problem and found a solution.

What does business leadership mean to you?

Business leadership is a tricky thing and means many things to different people. You usually know when business leadership is not working, as most people can spot a poorly run company, but I think it’s crucial to understand what it takes to really run a company well.

I believe a business leader is the one responsible for setting the mission and goals of the company, and then putting the right people and tools in place to achieve those goals. And the key is recognizing which people are the best fit for the various jobs needed. The other important thing to remember is allowing those same people you put in these positions to make decisions in furtherance of the goals. As an owner and leader of a business, it is important to recognize that one person does not know everything and, to be successful, you need others to provide advice and the know-how to make the company better. That is true leadership.

If you could change one thing about Southern Nevada, what would it be?

I would increase the amount of people who are vaccinated. It is the only way out of this pandemic.

What are you reading right now? Or binge-watching?

I am an entrepreneur at heart and enjoy watching "Shark Tank." I like learning about people’s new business ideas and seeing the critiques the sharks provide, which can be very insightful.

What do you do after work or on weekends?

No matter the events of the day, after work I make time for my family, eating dinner together and enjoying their company. My family and I are also hosting two foreign exchange students this year, one from Spain and one from Germany. And just a few weeks ago, we adopted two Akita puppies, who have a ton of rambunctious energy, so needless to say we have a lot going on.

If you could live anywhere else in the world, where would it be and why?

It is not so much where in the world I would live, but rather in the way I would like to live, which is on a big farm with lots of animals and greenery that goes on for miles. The location would not matter to me.

Whom do you admire and why?

My wife is the person I admire most. I know that sounds corny but it is true. It is her determination that stands out. When she sets her mind to doing something, she does it, and does it well. She comes from a small town in India and although moving here was all new to her, when she decided to go to school to become a dental hygienist, she worked hard and actually become the class valedictorian. That was a lesson in tenacity.

Additionally, when I work crazy hours, she takes care of me and keeps me on track, and most importantly, sane. Her patience is truly inspiring. It can be hard living with someone who is working a lot, and she does it without complaint.

What is something that people might not know about you?

Believe it or not, many people do not know I started and run a software company. I usually tell people I am an IT guy. After reading this article, I am sure many will be surprised.
