French WWII honor

The French have been bestowing their highest honor on U.S. veterans who were distinguished in their efforts to defeat the Nazis. A humiliating defeat came June 29, 2016, for the New Syrian Army's offensive to capture Boukamal, a prize possession of the Islamic State group and their last border crossing between Iraq and Syria. Michael Cimino

Director Michael Cimino arrives Oct. 28, 2008, at the third edition of the Rome Film Festival. Cimino, whose film "The Deer Hunter" became one of the great triumphs of Hollywood's 1970s heyday, and whose disastrous "Heaven's Gate" helped bring that era to a close, has died. Los Angeles County acting coroner's Lt. B. Kim told The Associated Press that Cimino died Saturday, July 2, 2016, at age 77. He said Cimino had been living in Beverly Hills but did not yet have further details on the circumstances of his death. View photo
