Two out-of-state companies are expanding to Las Vegas with acquisitions of local businesses.
Michael Baker Corp. of Pittsburgh today said it’s acquiring JMA Architects Inc., dba JMA Architecture Studios, a 40-person Las Vegas architectural and interior design firm.
JMA’s expertise is in the design of healthcare, hospitality, education and commercial buildings, the acquiring company said.
Terms were not disclosed.
Founded in 1945, JMA posted revenue in fiscal year 2010 of about $10 million.
With its staff including 10 architects, it ranks as the largest Las Vegas architecture firm in the 2011 VEGAS INC Book of Business Lists. VEGAS INC is a sister publication of the Las Vegas Sun.
Its noteworthy projects include the new Veterans Administration Las Vegas Medical Center, Las Vegas City Hall, World Market Center, Vegas PBS/Clark County School District Technology Campus and the Centennial Hills Library.
“Joining with Baker will result in improved services for our clients and more opportunities for our people. We will be able to take advantage of Baker’s broad footprint throughout the United States, and leverage its design-build capabilities and contractor relationships across our suite of design studios,’’ JMA President Tom Schoeman said in a statement.
Last week, the Ensign Group Inc. said it expanded into Nevada by acquiring Grand Court Las Vegas, a 152-unit assisted and independent living facility. Terms were not reported.
Its occupancy rate has been running about 85 percent, said Ensign, which is based in Mission Viejo, Calif.
The facility at 6650 W. Flamingo Road had been owned by Brookdale Senior Living of Nashville.
