Killer ordered to prison in 2002 drug slaying

A Las Vegas man was sentenced Wednesday to nearly 20 years in federal prison after he confessed to killing a woman in a Christmas Day 2002 drug deal. Senior U.S. District Judge Philip M. Pro sentenced Corey Thompson, 43, to 19 1/2 years in federal prison and five years of supervised release.

A stovetop fire Wednesday afternoon at an apartment building was doused by Clark County firefighters, causing little damage. Around 12:30 p.m., firefighters arrived at the Paradise Spa apartments at 9457 Las Vegas Blvd. South, Clark County fire officials said.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area officials closed six Lake Mojave boat-launch ramps Monday because of declining water levels. Lake Mohave’s water level has been declining from 641 feet since September and is expected to drop to around 630 feet by Wednesday. Officials expect the water levels to rise again after Sunday and return to 633 feet by Nov. 8. At that point, the launch ramps will be reopened.
