Having lived all over the Midwest, south, north and southern California and being form Nevada it's heartbreaking to see so much water in the Midwest causing destruction and destroying crops, entire towns, and the taking fertile top spoils out to sea.
People complain about the cost but when considering the constant repeating costs of destruction, rebuilding and losses in crop revenue and jobs I can't see how it's not cheaper for America to build a super canal project right across the middle of the country.
Its time for American innovative thinking, a massive canal across the country for load balancing would be like a huge westward migration of proportions in development. The jobs it would create in the short term (20 years for such a project) like what the Chinese are doing in Panama (most Americans have no idea they are building a new canal there instead of us), but that water way could balance flooding across the country, bring water to desolate wastelands in the west that are good for nothing right now, new towns and farming that will not only feed us but the entire world could spring up in the vast lands we have that are used for nothing, not even animals as many of these places are so desolate very little life survives in it.
Recreational uses, greening of the nation, new cross county shipping lanes getting products off the more expensive roads and into more fuel efficient cargo lanes, bring water to more of California which can supply crops to many more people at a much lower rate and then deliver those products more effectively across the massive canal faster that trucks and in larger bulk movements than even rail can support.
Just as Dams, rail, and freeways created new industrial centers all over the world, water canals do the same thing, only much more efficiently, its time for a coast to coast canal in America with splinter canals as load balancing where ever there is flooding, and balancing that water to drought areas where ever they might be. Our nation would be so much more productive, reducing costs and resource effectiveness.
In the past we had leadership set a vision for Space, its time for leadership to set a vision for a modernization of AMerica, high speed rail, rebuilding our super highways, bridges and freeways based on modern technologies and a massive canal system to utilize the flood waters and balance them across a super system that would benefit the entire world.
Its time to lead and stop whining and fighting.
I could name many other things that may be off the regular list, I won't try to list them all.
My family, we are natives of Nevada going back 5 generations so we have deep history here, the back story of Las Vegas is the history of my family.
Mt. Charleston and lee Canyon. I love that I can be in the mountains and cool off in the middle of summer, smell the pine and enjoy a meadow 45 minutes away.
Utah, yes Utah has tons to do for an out door person like me who loves nature, but I have no interest in living there.
Mormons, Again a surprise to some but if it were not for the Mormons there would be no Las Vegas and they keep the craziness in check. Many of them are in high places and bring a counter-balance to the anything goes casinos and reminds the government that there are people and businesses in town that have nothing to do with the casinos.
Secret places. Las Vegas is filled with cool places in and around town many don't know about, its fun to discover Las Vegas, get out of town and Nevada is an adventure waiting to happen at every turn for those willing to get off the freeway and explore.
History, many people I know think Vegas does not have any but LV has a rich history and dual personality waiting to be discovered and much of it has nothing to do with gaming. Mining, ranching, farming, secret government testing that still goes on, there are lots of history all around us in LV that many ignore or don't realize.
Western remnants: The old Las Vegas was a tougher town, both on and off the strip. Hard working people, pioneer stock, cowboys, inventors, mining, and adventure all have a rich contribution to Las Vegas and though often the city pretends to be little Irvine or LA Junior it is also a solid western town with many family values and great people that contrast against the Strip, tourism, and coastal influences. It's a mix I appreciate and the fact that we all get along so well even when we don't. Having lived all over LV can have a sense of community and it keeps trying to remake and reinvent itself to survive, so many other places are on a slide to nothingness and obsolescence.
Theres plenty to love and lots to do.
I guess your assuming most families coming to LV are really just teenage girls and their moms on a shopping trip.
There are so many other fun things for families to do in Las Vega, and yes some of them are shopping related. Almost every hotel has some kind of family feature;
Excaliber has it's midway and family friendly shows like the jousting.
ALong with the Volcano, the Bellagio water show, the Pirate show, the playground at the outdoor shopping mall, Fly Away, movie theaters in many hotels, bowling alleys, bike rentals, museums, aquariums, shark tanks and on and on.
Off the strip the activities are endless, rent a boat at the lake, take a picnic and head into the mountains, go to the giant shooting range, (something my kids love to do) , go out to the flats and try a wind cruise, go exploring along the many marked trails, take water, hike the meadows and streams, Vally of Fire, rafting, tour busses, Red Rock , hiking, rock climbing, rock concerts, plays, magic acts and more.
The point is there are tons of family safe things to do in LV, your list was anemic and seems more like you just phoned it in.
I have lived all over the US and seen or been involved in many job projects that project thousands. These jobs rarely ever come, and the ones that do are often very temporary and employ people from out of the area.
The recent solar plant is a perfect example, they promised lots of jobs, there was less than 250, they said they would do a lot for the Nevada economy, only the majority of the workers came from outside Nevada, they said the jobs would last, they did not, now there are only a few people working there.
30,000 jobs? Doing what exactly? Standing every 50 yards along the track? And who is going to drive more than half way to LV, then stop find a parking lot, take a shuttle to the train station, wait in lines, pay fees, hope the train is on time dragon your luggage then drag it all over once you get to LV, rent a car or take a cab, or worse a bus dragging your stuff around when you could have taken your car and skipped a lot of the time wasters and costs?
If this does not go all the way into central CA or other areas deep into the state people are not going to ride it after the early novelty wears off.
The 30,000 jobs is a typical hype to sell it to the tax payers to get at your money.
Really want to help people, just give 30,0000 people the $196,000 and see how they spend! That would boost the economy far more than this waste will do.
My only gripe is with the rental car system. You can get stuck in the lines waiting for the buses sucking in exhaust standing is the hot sun or freezing in winter and it can take up to 45 minutes if the airport is busy. This should at the least be enclosed but the old system with the cars close to the airport was cheaper for the traveler and fast too.
Once you get to the rental terminal you have ore lines even if you have reservations and then get surprised with fees for using the so-called improvements on top of other fees and taxes making the cost of rental often double in price.
It's far to expensive, time wasting and too many steps to get your car that can add hours on a slow day to a long trip and dampen my excitement for coming to LV in the first place.
It also means it takes an extra hour to get back into the airport when leaving.
For the many things McCarren does right it sure screwed up on the car rental system now in place.
Making visitors stand out in bus lines sucking in diesel fumes in the heat, wind or cold while dragging luggage is just bad service. When conventions are in town it can take an hour to get to the rental terminal and I've waited in line there another hour to get a car, often despite having VIP cards and reservations.
The you charge extra fees for the privilege of the delays and time wasting systems.
Lastly, the cost of the many add-on fees and taxes is one of the worst in all the places I travel if not the absolute worse often easily doubling the cost of renting a car. Cars already cost more to rent in LV than in most other cities including tourist destinations.
Roll it all up and LV is just not the value it used to be, and far too many hassles that make visitors think twice before visiting.
The airport may have gotten most things right but the casinos and resorts, fees, the many taxes an all the red tape involved in getting to your room make me book almost anywhere else I can think of over coming to LV anymore. I'm sure it drives away many others too.
I hope this fails, I do want to see more jobs but there has to be a certain considerations for the reputation companies like this to do Nevada. We already have a rep for unethical companies, and it's been widely reported about how many businesses do not want to come to NV because of the reputation it has that sometimes damages the company after the move. Many great companies already here uses Corp. addresses in other states because of NV's bad reputation.
Nevada does not need more companies we all know will operate with questionable tactics and even if legal will be perceived by everyone as profiting off the misfortunes of others and doing so through mean spirited threats and bending the line of ethics and morals.
In the long run these kinds of companies hurt Nevada more than the short term value of bottom feeder, high turnover jobs and a little more taxes. Lets take a pass on this one. Wouldn't a few dozen smaller yet ethical, moral, and positive companies be better than another giant high profile company that we all know will at sometime get into trouble, be hated by everyone, and whose employees will not be able to help themselves from crossing the legal line... its inevitable.
