Restaurateurs keep it simple: Fresh food, emphasis on customer service

Partners Daniel Kouretas, left, and Jared DeBehnke pose in front of Jared’s Old Fashioned Hot Dogs & Hamburgers at Pawn Plaza, 725 Las Vegas Boulevard South, in downtown Las Vegas Tuesday, April 11, 2017.

Describe your business.

We are proud to sell fresh — never frozen — all-beef patties and hot dogs the traditional way: no gourmet and fancy items, just the best quality food that we all grew up on.

Who are your customers?

We serve a lot of the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop customers, as well as a growing base of locals who come regularly. This includes the surrounding law and government offices downtown.

What is your business philosophy?

If you treat the customers and the quality of food you are serving with the utmost respect you will be successful and earn the loyalty of the public. You must also like to have fun. After all, we are selling hot dogs and hamburgers.

What’s the most important part of your job?

Many people say this but it is our mantra: Customer service is above everything else. We chose to be in this business to be able to interact with a wide variety of people. Being located in Pawn Plaza, we have the opportunity to meet people from all over the world, and we think that is pretty cool.

What is the hardest part about doing business in Las Vegas?

Las Vegas is a transient town. People are from all parts of the country, so everyone has different tastes and expectations. You can’t make everyone happy with the type of product you are selling, but you can always try to ensure the best experience possible for each customer.

What is the best part about doing business here?

You get to learn from each customer. Everyone has a different story on how they ended up here. Being a local for 16 years, I have made some great friends who have come from all parts of the world. There is a sense of camaraderie that comes with living in Las Vegas. Everyone looks out for and supports each other.

What obstacles has your business overcome?

Being in a tourist area, we find a lot of locals are intimidated or concerned that we have “Strip” pricing. We did not do that, as we hope to add another two locations in the locals market in the next 12 months.

What has been your hardest lesson in business?

The hardest lesson in business is realizing that you don’t always have the right answer. Huge risks are involved when starting a new business. There are a lot of unknowns. No matter how much of a sure thing you think you have, you won’t know until you throw your hat in the ring and get open.
