MEET: MOMENT 3D:

Owner of 3-D print shop: ‘Anytime you want to make a physical thing, you’re our client’

Alex Gao is the founder and a sculptor at Moment 3D, which offers 3-D printing services and conducts workshops to teach the public about the technology.

Describe your business.

Moment 3D exists to bring our client’s vision into reality. We provide product development service that specializes in 3-D printing. We have helped develop prototypes for jewelry, electronic housing, family portraits, statues, replacement parts, toys and even drones.

Our long-term goal is to bring prototyping, manufacturing, patenting and marketing under one roof, where we can help anyone bring an idea into the market. In addition, we host workshops and open houses from time to time, providing private lessons for clients to run their 3-D printers, and we work with local artists to feature their work and talk everything 3-D.

How was the concept conceived?

I remember the excitement I felt when I held my first 3-D print in 2010, a creation I’d been working on for months. When I realized there is not a good outlet for people to learn about 3-D printing, I saw an opportunity to bridge that gap between the technology and consumers.

Anytime you want to make a physical thing, you’re our client. Our clients are businesses that are product-focused — inventors, makers, jewelers and artists.

What’s the most complex order you’ve worked on?

One of the more complex projects we took early on was a request to build a custom walker-cane prototype. The project required multiple skill sets, such as computer-aided design, 3-D printing and metal fabrication, to deliver the functional prototype.

What is your business philosophy?

In no particular order: collaboration, inspire, connect, care and. finally, work hard. Work hard. Work hard.

What is the best part about doing business in Southern Nevada?

There are lots of conventions hosted here throughout the year, which is a good access to information and projects.

What obstacles has your business overcome?

We have overcome many obstacles along our journey to start the business. Our short-term challenge is growth and exposure. We’re just getting started, but our goal is to build a long-term business.

Tell us more about your focus on education.

Although we focus on product development, education is a big part of what we do. Every third Saturday of the month, we a host free workshop to the public. This workshop serves as a platform for people to learn about 3-D printing technology. Topics can range from software/hardware tips, 3-D print crash course, creative demonstration, or even more hands-on activities.
