Memories You Can Hold

True to life figurines are seen on display at the Memories You Can Hold store, Monday, Dec. 10, 2018. A figure is sculpted by a 3D printer based off hundreds of images of a single person in a process known as photogrammetry. Launch slideshow »

Developed in the mid-1980s, 3-D printing has become a mainstream product in manufacturing and has grown to a $7 billion industry according to Wohlers Associates, a consulting firm in Fort Collins, Colo., that specializes in new developments and trends in rapid product growth. Memories You Can Hold is one of the few 3-D printing businesses in Las Vegas, offering locals “the ultimate 3-D selfie.”

Describe your business and product.

Memories You Can Hold provides 3-D scanning and printing of next-generation digital selfies. That means a miniature duplicate of you at this moment in time. The products range in size from 1/8 scale (approximately 8 inches), 1/10 scale (approximately 7 inches), and 1/12 scale (approximately 5 inches), creating duplicates of pets and people.

How was the concept conceived?

Our process began in Hollywood on movies like "Avatar" and games like "Red Dead Redemption," where we scan and digitize actors and props for use in digital production. When we saw the quality of what we were creating in media, we decided that it was perfect to bring to the public for creation of special mementos.

Who are your clients/customers?

Brides, grooms, graduates, sports players, adults, kids, pets, and anyone who wants to freeze a moment in time like a special event or memory.

What sets you apart from other 3-D-printing companies?

We use a process that is not like any other. We capture with photogrammetry, we process our files after the scan for accuracy, and we print using state-of-the-art printers.

Our goal is to help people remember specific times in their lives, whether it is a milestone like graduation or a wedding, a birthday, or just a great day, we want to make sure we can freeze time for them to help them to remember.

We have a subscription plan where someone can bring their little one in on their birthday and have a permanent record of every year of their lives. They grow up so fast, and flat photos don't tell the whole story.

What’s the most complex order you’ve worked on?

We have scanned someone and they wanted the output to be three feet tall. It was a challenge to fit all of the pieces together, but we figured out a way to do it.

Are there plans to expand locally, regionally or nationally?

We have just begun our national rollout, and it is shaping up rather nicely.

What is the best part about doing business in Las Vegas?

Vegas offers a unique cross section of people from cosplayers to sports players, from showgoers to showgirls, from celebrities to just plain folks. Its all here.

What challenges or obstacles do you face as a small business owner?

Like any small business, we are challenged to get the word out, but our story is spreading. We had one grandma and granddaughter come in who lived 2,000 miles apart. They were both scanned and now get to see each other every day and that makes us smile.
