Citing pandemic, Park MGM to reduce midweek hotel hours

The hotel at Park MGM will reduce days of operation beginning next week, according to a memo sent today to the company's employees.

The hotel will close at noon on Mondays before reopening for weekend business at noon on Thursdays, according to the memo, which was sent out by MGM Las Vegas portfolio president Anton Nikodemus.

Hours for Park MGM’s casino, pool and restaurants will not be affected.

Such a move was hinted at by MGM CEO Bill Hornbuckle during a quarterly earnings conference call last week, and it’s possible that additional MGM properties could announce temporary midweek closings because of lagging visitor numbers brought on by the pandemic.

In the memo, Nikodemus referred to the holiday season as being “traditionally a slow period for Las Vegas in terms of visitation and business levels.”

He did say the midweek closure is not expected to last past December. The NoMad luxury hotel at the Park MGM site will remain open seven days per week.

“We will continue evaluating business levels to determine how long Park MGM’s mid-week hotel closures remain in effect,” Nikodemus said. “This year has proven to be especially challenging due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19 and the absence of the major meetings, conventions and events that typically fill Las Vegas’s calendars during the fall and winter months.”

In September, midweek hotel occupancy in Las Vegas was 39%, a decrease of 47% from the same month in 2019, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. Weekend occupancy was 66%, off 30% from September 2019.

Citing weak customer demand, Wynn announced earlier this month that it would cut the operating schedule at Encore to four days a week, closing midweek.
