NEVADA HOSPITALS MAKE SUBSTANTIAL STRIDES IN QUALITY IMPROVEMENT
National and state trends show Nevada hospitals rank in the top 10% in the nation and are the most improved
Las Vegas– April 11, 2012 – A recent analysis of national and state trends in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) clinical quality of care measures data shows that Nevada hospitals have made some truly impressive gains in healthcare quality. When U.S. hospitals are ranked on their performance on these measures, 20% (5/25) of the Nevada hospitals rank in the top 10%.
In 2004, Nevada Hospitals joined the nation in the CMS Inpatient Hospital Quality Data Reporting (IQR) Program. The program’s purpose is to help consumers make more informed decisions about their healthcare options and encourage hospitals to improve the quality of inpatient care by making quality of care information available on the Hospital Compare* website. This website shows how hospitals are performing on a number of measures; including quality of care measures that show the percent of the time hospitals give recommended treatments that are known to get the best results for patients. HealthInsight, the Quality Improvement Organization for Nevada, has been ranking the nation’s hospitals based on their overall performance on the quality measures since the inception of the IQR. The rankings are available at www.healthinsight.org.
In the most recent rankings, Nevada had a higher percentage of hospitals in the top 10% than any other state except Florida. In 2004, when the Hospital Compare data first became available, no Nevada hospitals ranked in the top 10% and for the 50 states and the District of Columbia, Nevada hospitals had the lowest average overall performance rate. The graph below, which compares the average performance rate on the quality of care measures for all U.S hospitals with that for Nevada hospitals over time, shows that for the nation’s hospitals, the overall performance rate has been steadily increasing, but Nevada’s hospitals have been improving at an even faster rate. Nevada has gone from being last to being in the top 25%. This makes Nevada hospitals the most improved in the country.

HealthInsight sends congratulations to all Nevada hospitals in recognition of the hard work and dedication of the leadership and staff members.
Figure 1. Average performance rate for CMS quality of care measures for U.S. and Nevada hospitals. This graph shows the trends over time in the average performance rate on the CMS quality of care measures for U.S. (blue) and Nevada hospitals (red). HealthInsight ranks U.S. hospitals based on their performance rate on quality measures from four clinical topic areas: heart attack; heart failure; pneumonia; and surgical care. The performance rate is simply the sum of the numerators for all measures from all four topic areas, divided by the sum of all the denominators for those measures.
*Hospital Compare is a consumer-oriented website that provides information on how well hospitals provide recommended care to their patients. On this site, the consumer can see the recommended care that an adult should get if being treated for a heart attack, heart failure, or pneumonia or having surgery.
