Walking Across America for Alzheimer’s Awareness

Jesse Ables, a 22 year old from Las Vegas, Nevada, will be walking across America to raise awareness about a particularly cruel form of Alzheimer’s disease that has devastated his family.
Jesse’s father, James, was diagnosed with Younger-onset (also called Early-onset) Alzheimer’s disease in 2011 at the age of 58.
Seeing the distress that his parents face on a daily basis, and the lack of awareness and assistance available to people in their situation, he decided to take action. He will begin his 2600 mile journey in Santa Monica, California on Sunday, April 15, 2012 at 1:30pm, and will be walking to St. Simons, Georgia; a journey he estimates will take five months.
He is hopeful his ambitious endeavor will raise awareness about the disease and help younger, working-class people facing this fate.
Having Alzheimer's at such an early age puts unique pressures on families because most newly diagnosed patients are still in the workforce and do not have adequate resources to deal with an early retirement. Like Jesse’s family, they may also lose their health insurance. Many also still have children at home, and/or are taking care of elderly parents.
More details about his family, and his journey across America, are available on his website: www.2600miles.com. Jesse can be contacted via email at [email protected].
He is currently seeking sponsors and/or a partnership as he makes his final preparations for this courageous journey.
