Steven Jones, a UNLV graduate student and Henderson resident, won a scholarship to the Humor Project 55th international conference taking place in Silver Bay, New York on June 1-3, 2012. Andrew Tarvin, an accomplished comedian and president of Humor That Works, a corporate training firm in New York City, invited recipients of his newsletter to submit a brief statement on the importance of humor for a chance to win a scholarship to the conference. Steven's winning entry noted that "humor is essential in certain situations" and described a "practical, down-to-earth approach to humor." A few days later he was contacted by Dr. Joel Goodman, founder and Director of the Humor Project, who offered his congratulations and an invitation to attend the full conference, including Tarvin's pre-conference workshop, "Stand-Upbeat Comedy Bootcamp".
Steven performed as a classical pianist and at stand-up comedy venues in northern Nevada before relocating to Sun City Anthem in Henderson. He taught math part-time at Nevada State College and then enrolled in UNLV to obtain a master's degree. He currently teaches in conjunction with an appointment as Graduate Assisistant in the mathematical sciences department at UNLV. "Entering the contest was just a lark, having seen the offer in Andrew's newsletter. Now, actually getting to go to the conference is a great opportunity for me to look for a niche in the humor field, hopefully something that will eventually tie in with math."
The 2012 Humor Project conference includes over 50 sessions focusing on the positive applications of humor and creativity in business, health care, education, therapy, parenting, and life. Over the years the conference has attracted more than 23,000 people from all 50 states, throughout Canada, six continents, and "The Moon" (Apollo Moonwalking astronaut Dr. Edgar Mitchell). "This learning-filled, laughter-fueled conference is designed to be positively productive for organizations, personally enriching, and professional practical," comments Dr. Goodman, who goes on to say, "In this challenge-filled world, we need humor, hope, healing, and creativity more than ever to survive and thrive. This conference is a great way to celebrate humor and to help people get more 'smileage' out of their lives and jobs."
