Nevada Health Centers, Inc. Receives Funding for an Immediate Facilities Improvement Project
Las Vegas, Nev. (May 1, 2012)
Nevada Health Centers, Inc. (NVHC) was informed today by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) that they have been awarded a $499,788 grant, titled Immediate Facilities Improvement project. This funding was authorized by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and was granted to community health centers that provide preventive care and primary care to underserved populations. The award will be used to remodel Eastern Family Medical and Dental Center located at 2122 S. Eastern Avenue in Las Vegas, Nevada. The building is 9,500 square feet and provides family practice, pediatric care, OB/GYN services and dental care under one roof. In 2011, NVHC provided care to more than 6,000 patients at this site. The remodel will enhance the building by adding new flooring, new exam rooms and a new parking lot. The end result will be improved patient flow and increased access to care.
The need for medical services in Nevada continues to grow. Nevada has been one of the hardest hit states in the nation during the current economic downturn and still leads the nation in unemployment with an unemployment rate of 12%. When people lose their jobs they often lose their health insurance. The uninsured rate in Nevada hovers between 22-23% which is the third highest rate in the nation. NVHC is a safety-net provider who cares for this uninsured population.
This grant award is in addition to other capital grants that have been awarded to NVHC over the last several years. Federal grant funding through HRSA, private foundations such as the Dream Fund of UCLA and the MGM Resorts Foundation, in addition to other local grants have assisted NVHC in building 3 other new facilities. A new building for Carlin Community Health Center opened in Carlin, Nevada last spring. Two other new health centers are slated to open in May of this year and include Martin Luther King Health Center in Las Vegas and Sierra Nevada Health Center in Carson City. Grand Opening events for these facilities will take place on June 11, 2012 in Las Vegas and July 16, 2012 in Carson City. These two health centers will also house the Las Vegas and Carson City administration staff. NVHC will provide care to even more people with the increased space and eventual increase in providers.
