The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Honors Young Cancer Survivors With Its Annual Man & Woman Of The Year Competition

Southern Nevadans face the challenge of raising the most money
in this unique competition

May 2, 2012 Las Vegas, NV— The Southern Nevada Office of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is hosting its Annual Man & Woman of the Year grand finale on Friday, May 18, 2012 at the Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas.
This unique fundraising competition challenges men and women in Southern Nevada to raise the most money without knowing how much their competitors have raised until the grand finale. With men versus men and women versus women, each dollar donated counts as one vote for the title of Man or Woman of the Year.
This year three women and four men are competing, including blood cancer survivors and one doctor. The competition is in honor of children who are local blood cancer survivors, represented by one Boy and one Girl of the Year, who are recognized during the grand finale.
The ten-week competition concludes with a silent auction and cocktail reception where competitors have one last opportunity to raise additional funds to win the coveted titles.
“It’s a fantastic way to get the community involved in an important cause,” said Kristina Crawford, LLS Campaign Manager. “Those competing find a variety of ways to raise money, from launching simple letter writing campaigns, to organizing game night, and holding fashion shows. The man and woman candidates are relentless, focused on making life better for hundreds of thousands of people who are affected by leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma.”
Funds raised by Man & Woman of the Year participants help provide financial assistance for patients, free educational materials, patient and family support groups, and a peer-to-peer counseling program.
Last year’s winners, Tibi Ellis and Kevin Hayes, raised more than $20,000 each.
This year’s top sponsors are Sam’s Club, United Healthcare, and MFX Visual Arts Las Vegas.

New cases of leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma accounted for 10% of the 1.5 million new cancer cases diagnosed in the United States in 2011.
