Las Vegas will join the worldwide Earth Hour event as lights are turned off around the city – and the Strip – from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 27. The World Wildlife Fund, which organizes the event, held a news conference Tuesday at the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign, which also will be turned off for the event. The organization hopes to send a message about climate change and the importance of energy conservation by getting as many people as possible to turn off their lights.

Glen Heather Estates homeowners are bracing for more than 10 percent of their neighborhood to be wiped out. Twenty-three homes are expected to be bulldozed and covered with pavement as part of the widening of Interstate 15 from Sahara Avenue to the Spaghetti Bowl. But Glen Heather is not the only neighborhood that will shrink as the freeway gets bigger.
County stands by UMC layoffs after heated debate

Clark County commissioners let their previous decision stand in allowing the layoffs of 16 certified nursing assistants at University Medical Center, but only after what was, at times, a heated discussion with hospital officials. Commissioners revisited the layoffs Tuesday after approving them in their Feb. 16 meeting. Part of the discussion stemmed from complaints from the employees who will be terminated, some of whom said they found out about the layoffs from TV news reports after the meeting.
Sahara Avenue line of rapid bus system gets $34.4 million

The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada will receive $34.4 million to construct a Sahara Avenue line of the new ACE rapid bus system, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced Wednesday. The funds are part of the department’s Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery, or TIGER, grants created by last year’s stimulus act. The department announced 51 new grants today, with the Sahara bus line being one of the largest.

The Department of Motor Vehicles will not be able to issue or renew driver's licenses or identification cards today because of a scheduled outage of the Social Security Administration's validation system.
DMV offices that are usually open on Saturday, which include the ones in Henderson, North Las Vegas and the Flamingo Road and Sahara Avenue offices in Las Vegas, will remain open.

Gas prices in Nevada have fallen over the past month, but the state kept its status as having the sixth most expensive gas in the continental United States. The average price of a gallon of gas has fallen 6 cents since the beginning of January.

Gas prices in Nevada have gone up 12 cents in the last month, reaching their highest point since October 2008, according to AAA.
The average price for a gallon of gas in the state is now $2.85. The national average for gas is $2.75, also 12 cents more than a month ago, the auto club said.
